About Open Travel Guide

Open Travel Guide is a small editorial project. We publish reference travel guides — country by country, region by region — for travellers who want to plan a trip without wading through autoplaying ads, popups, and listicles.

Our work

We cover destinations across the world at three levels: the country, the region, and the individual place — a beach, a hike, a hotel, a meal. Each guide is built from primary research and structured so you can skim for the answer or read straight through.

We publish what we think is honestly useful and skip the rest. If a destination doesn't have a guide yet, it's because we haven't gotten to it. We're working through.

How we make money

Open Travel Guide is funded by two things: (1) downloadable PDF travel guides sold through our shop, and (2) affiliate commissions on a small number of carefully-chosen travel-services links (hotels, tours). When a link is affiliate, it's marked. Commissions never influence which destinations we cover or what we recommend within a destination.

Editorial standards

Every guide carries a “last updated” date. We review and re-publish guides on a rolling schedule — annually at minimum, more often when a destination changes (closure, new transport link, political situation). If you spot something out of date or wrong, please email us — corrections go in fast.

We don't accept payment for inclusion. We don't accept comped trips in exchange for coverage. We do sometimes accept press passes for paid attractions and disclose those at the point of relevance.

Who runs this

Open Travel Guide is a small editorial project led by our Editor-in-Chief, Daniel Mercer, who is accountable for everything the site publishes. Guides are produced by a team of subject-area editors — meet them on the editorial team page — and every page passes a review pipeline of source verification, factual-grounding checks, and quality screening, described in our editorial policy. The site is published on a static-content platform with a separate small shop, both built and maintained in-house.
