Berat — UNESCO World Heritage City
Berat is known as the 'town of a thousand windows' for the rows of Ottoman-era houses stacked up the hillside on either bank of the Osum River, with the Kalaja fortress crowning the ridge above. The old town is split into two historic quarters, Mangalem below the castle and Gorica across the river, both still lived-in residential neighborhoods rather than reconstructed museum pieces. A day here is mostly walking: steep cobbled lanes, church interiors, and views back down over the whitewashed houses.

Kruje — Skanderbeg's Fortress Town
Kruje is the hilltop town from which Skanderbeg led Albanian resistance against the Ottomans in the 15th century, and it's the most accessible day trip from Tirana at under an hour away. The castle and its steep old bazaar make for a compact half-day rather than a full one, which makes Kruje easy to pair with a late start or an afternoon return. The bazaar itself is a working shopping street for rugs, copperware and souvenirs, not a reconstruction.

Butrint National Park — Ancient Greco-Roman Ruins
Butrint is a layered archaeological site on a lagoon near Saranda, with visible remains spanning Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Venetian occupation on one compact peninsula. Because it's a proper national park with woodland paths between the ruins rather than an open plaza, walking it feels more like a nature reserve than a typical ruin site. It pairs naturally with a Saranda base, given it's only 30 minutes away, but is a long haul on its own from Tirana.

Theth — Albanian Alps Village
Theth is a scattered mountain village in the Albanian Alps (Bjeshket e Namuna), reached by a rough mountain road that itself takes 3-4 hours from Tirana and is only fully open in the warmer months. It's a hiking base rather than a sightseeing stop — stone kulla towers, a working church, and trailheads into the surrounding peaks are the draw, not museums or monuments. Given the drive time, this is really a trip that needs an overnight to be worthwhile rather than a true day trip.

Shkodra and Lake Shkodra (Skadar)
Shkodra is northern Albania's historic lake town, anchored by Rozafa Castle on a rocky outcrop above the confluence of three rivers, with the country's largest lake stretching north toward Montenegro. It's a livelier, more walkable city than Kruje or Berat, with a long pedestrian corridor and a strong cycling culture. The lake itself is the other half of the trip — worth reaching the shore for, whether by a short drive or boat.
