When to hike
Seasonal conditions in Albania.
- Spring
- May-June is excellent with wildflowers in full bloom, waterfalls at peak flow, and milder temperatures. Snow may still close Valbona Pass until late May. Perfect for lower elevation trails.
- Summer
- July-August is best for the Valbona-Theth route and Albanian Alps. Start early (6-7am) to avoid afternoon heat on exposed trails. Carry extra water as some springs dry up.
- Fall
- September-October offers beautiful foliage, cooler temperatures, and fewer hikers. The Valbona Valley turns spectacular gold and red. Most trails remain accessible until October.
- Winter
- November-April sees most alpine trails closed due to snow. Llogara National Park and coastal area trails remain accessible. The Albanian Alps are inaccessible without specialized mountaineering skills.
Local hazards
What to watch out for on the trail.
Hazard: Unexploded ordnance (UXO) remains in remote border areas near Kosovo and North Macedonia — always stay on marked trails and never venture off-path in these zones
Hazard: Sun exposure at altitude — UV radiation increases significantly above 1,000m; apply sunscreen frequently even on cloudy days
Hazard: Loose rock and scree on descent from Valbona Pass — trekking poles strongly recommended for stability
Hazard: Rapidly changing mountain weather — thunderstorms can develop quickly in summer afternoons in the Albanian Alps; carry rain gear
Hazard: Limited mobile coverage in deep valleys like Valbona and Theth — inform your guesthouse of your planned route and expected return time
Hazard: Water sources in the Albanian Alps are generally safe to drink, but in Osum Canyon area use purification tablets as water may be contaminated by grazing livestock
