Getting Around Armenia 2026

Transport in Armenia decoded — what to use for which journey, and what each option costs.

Armenia is a landlocked country in the South Caucasus region with a rich history dating back over 3,000 years. Known as the first nation to officially adopt Christianity, Armenia offers ancient monasteries, stunning mountain landscapes, and warm hospitality. From the vibrant capital Yerevan to the medieval monasteries perched on cliffsides, Armenia combines deep cultural heritage with breathtaking natural beauty.

Rental
Car rental is useful for day trips to monasteries and rural areas. Driving standards are low — expect aggressive behavior. 4WD recommended for mountain routes.
Walking
Yerevan city center is pleasantly walkable. Most attractions between Republic Square and the Cascade are within 30 minutes on foot.

Travel smarter, not harder.

Tip

Download Yandex Taxi and GG Taxi apps before arriving — they are far better than street taxis and both have English interfaces

Tip

The metro is useful for the north-south route but only has 10 stations — buses and taxis needed for most destinations

Tip

For day trips, marshrutkas from Kilikia Bus Station are very cheap ($1-3) but require understanding of Armenian bus system — ask hotel staff for help

Tip

An SUV or 4WD is strongly recommended if renting a car to visit mountain monasteries like Amberd or high-altitude areas

Tip

Driving in Yerevan involves ignoring many traffic rules — use taxis unless comfortable with aggressive urban driving
