Koh Dach (Silk Island)
A river island in the Mekong opposite Phnom Penh, reached by a short ferry crossing, where several villages still weave silk on wooden looms and grow mulberry trees for silkworms. It's a half-day out of the capital rather than a full one: flat dirt lanes, stilt houses, and small family workshops rather than a polished attraction. Udong (Former Royal Capital)
Cambodia's royal capital before Phnom Penh, Udong is now a ridge of stupas and temple ruins rising out of the plains, reachable in about an hour by road. It matters historically rather than visually in the way Angkor does: this is where several Cambodian kings are buried, and the hilltop stupas were damaged during the Khmer Rouge period and later restored. The climb up the ridge gives a quiet, largely uncrowded view over the surrounding rice fields.

Kampot
A riverside town in southern Cambodia known for French colonial-era shophouses along its waterfront and the pepper farms in the surrounding hills, it's a long enough drive that it works better as an overnight than a rushed day trip. The pace here is slow: a walk through the old town's faded buildings, a river view at sunset, and countryside dotted with pepper plantations rather than a single headline sight.

Banteay Srei Temple
A 10th-century temple built primarily of pink sandstone, set apart from the main Angkor complex and known for some of the finest and most detailed relief carving in Khmer architecture. Its small scale compared to Angkor Wat or Bayon means the visit is shorter, but the carvings reward slow, close viewing rather than a quick walk-through. The drive out through the countryside is part of the experience, passing rural villages north of Siem Reap.

Tonle Sap Lake (Kampong Phluk)
A flooded-forest stilt village on the Tonle Sap, reached by tuk-tuk and then a boat that winds through a forest of stilt houses standing many meters above the ground in the dry season, dropping to the waterline when the lake swells in the wet season. It's a working fishing community rather than a staged floating market, so the experience varies noticeably with season and water level. Boat rides typically continue out onto the open lake itself.
