Gaoui Village
Gaoui is a village of red mud-brick architecture just outside N'Djamena, built on the site of a former Sao civilization settlement and later a Kotoko chiefdom. The main draw is the chief's compound (the Sultanate/Sao museum), where earthen buildings and small collections of Sao-era pottery and artifacts give a sense of the pre-Islamic cultures that lived along the Chari basin before the Kotoko and Chadian states formed.
