Beijing, the capital of China, is a sprawling metropolis where ancient imperial history meets state-of-the-art modernity. Home to the Forbidden City, the Great Wall, and countless UNESCO World Heritage Sites, it offers an unparalleled window into 3,000 years of Chinese civilization.
Traditional markets
Where locals shop and travellers find treasures.
Panjiayuan Antique Market
The crown jewel of Beijing's markets. Over 3,000 dealers spread across indoor and outdoor sections selling antiques, folk crafts, books, calligraphy, stone rubbings, Cultural Revolution items and more. Arrive at dawn on weekends for the best selection and atmosphere. Most 'antiques' are high-quality reproductions.
Silk Market (Xiushui Shichang)
A six-story indoor market infamous among foreign visitors for counterfeit branded goods and aggressive vendor tactics. Also sells real silk products, cashmere, tailor-made clothing, luggage and accessories. Bargaining is intense.
Pearl Market (Hongqiao Pearl Market)
Located opposite the east gate of the Temple of Heaven, the Pearl Market specializes in freshwater and saltwater pearls on the top floor, with electronics, clothing and accessories on lower floors. High-quality freshwater pearls at negotiable prices make it worth a visit.
Yashow Market
Similar to the Silk Market but with a slightly calmer atmosphere. Known for sports goods (especially Nike, Adidas - almost all counterfeit), casual clothing, accessories and tailor-made items. Popular with expats.
Liulichang Cultural Street
A restored historical street of traditional arts and culture shops selling calligraphy supplies, ink stones, seal carving, classical books, paintings and antique reproductions. The street has been a cultural shopping destination since the Qing dynasty. A more refined alternative to bargain markets.
Malls & modern shopping
Air-conditioned, international brands, and food courts.
China World Mall
Beijing's premier luxury shopping mall connected to the China World Hotel and World Trade Center complex. Houses Cartier, Prada, Louis Vuitton, Hermès and every major luxury brand. The underground level has Apple Store and mid-range international brands.
Taikoo Li Sanlitun
An open-air retail complex combining upscale international brands with lifestyle concepts, restaurants and bars. The retail village atmosphere makes it more pleasant to shop than enclosed malls. The SUPER BRAND MALL section has Nike, Adidas and popular mid-range brands.
SKP Beijing (Shin Kong Place)
One of China's most successful luxury department stores, SKP is the go-to destination for Chinese luxury shoppers. World-class brands across beauty, fashion and lifestyle. The SKP-S concept store next door features a futuristic retail concept.
Joy City (Xidan Joy City)
A massive multi-level mall popular with young Beijingers in the Xidan shopping district. More affordable mainstream brands, local Chinese fashion labels, large food court and entertainment. Very lively on weekends.
