Vinales Valley
Vinales is a valley in Pinar del Rio province defined by mogotes, steep-sided limestone hills covered in vegetation, rising out of red tobacco fields. It is Cuba's main tobacco-growing region and a UNESCO World Heritage Cultural Landscape, and the appeal is walking or riding through working farmland rather than visiting a single monument. Most of the day is spent outdoors, on foot or horseback, moving between tobacco vegas, a cave, and viewpoints over the valley floor.

Trinidad
Trinidad is a colonial-era town in Sancti Spiritus province, its center a UNESCO World Heritage Site of cobbled streets and pastel houses built on wealth from 19th-century sugar plantations in the nearby Valle de los Ingenios. At 5 hours each way by bus, this is really an overnight or very long day, and the town rewards slow walking rather than a checklist. The core experience is the historic center itself plus, if time allows, the sugar-mill valley just outside town.

Cienfuegos
Cienfuegos is a coastal city on the south side of Cuba, distinct from the country's other colonial towns because it was founded by French settlers in the early 19th century, giving its center a more neoclassical, French-influenced layout than the Spanish colonial towns elsewhere on the island. Its historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the day trip is mostly a walk around the Prado and Parque Marti with a look at the bay.

Playas del Este
Playas del Este is a string of sandy beaches just east of Havana along the coast, the closest beach escape for anyone based in the capital. At only 30-45 minutes away, it's a genuine half-day or full-day option without the commitment of the longer trips to Varadero or the south coast. The draw is straightforward: sand and swimming close to the city, not colonial architecture or museums.

Matanzas and Cuevas de Bellamar
Matanzas is a port city east of Havana known historically for its bridges and as a birthplace of Afro-Cuban musical traditions including rumba, while the nearby Cuevas de Bellamar is a limestone cave system that has been open to visitors since the mid-19th century, making it one of the oldest show caves in Cuba. Combining the two makes for a varied day mixing a city walk with an underground excursion, at a manageable 1.5-2 hours from Havana each way.
