Day trip tips
Make the most of your excursions.
Obtain all travel permits from the Ministry of Tourism in Asmara at least 2 days before planned excursions — permits specify which regions you are authorised to visit
Depart by 7 AM for Massawa to beat the midday heat — the coastal city sits at sea level and reaches 40°C+ from April to September
Visit Keren on a Monday to coincide with the famous weekly camel and livestock market — at any other time, Keren is pleasant but quieter
Bring all food and water for excursions to Qohaito and Filfil — these remote sites have no facilities whatsoever
The Massawa-Asmara scenic railway operates on selected days — check at Asmara Railway Station for current schedule and book early as tickets sell out
