Entoto Mountains and Maryam Church
Entoto is the forested ridge above Addis Ababa where Emperor Menelik II established his capital before moving down to the site of the modern city, and the Entoto Maryam church he built there still stands with an adjoining museum of royal-era artifacts. The hilltop gives a wide view over the Addis Ababa basin and is one of the few places near the city where the original eucalyptus-planting history is visible on the ground. It's a short trip, so it works as a half-day add-on rather than a full day out.

Adadi Mariam Rock-Hewn Church
Adadi Mariam is a rock-hewn church carved from a single block of stone, built in a style that echoes the far more famous churches of Lalibela but far closer to Addis Ababa. It's an active place of worship, not a museum piece, so visits usually mean removing shoes and seeing services or priests going about their routines. Because it's a single site rather than a cluster, the visit itself is fairly short, but the drive both ways is a real part of the day.

Wenchi Crater Lake
Wenchi is a volcanic crater lake in the highlands west of Addis Ababa, with a lake inside the crater, a monastery on an island reachable by boat, and hot springs on the crater floor. The setting is genuinely different from the church-focused day trips closer to the city because the main activity is outdoors - walking, riding a horse down into the crater, or taking a boat on the lake. It's a longer trip, so it needs a full day to be worthwhile.

Debre Libanos Monastery and Portuguese Bridge
Debre Libanos is one of Ethiopia's most important monasteries, founded by Saint Tekle Haymanot in the 13th century, set on a cliff edge above the Jemma River gorge. Nearby is the so-called Portuguese Bridge, a stone bridge over the gorge traditionally attributed to Portuguese Jesuit missionaries, and the gorge itself is a reliable spot to see Gelada baboons grazing on the grassy slopes. The combination of an active monastery, dramatic gorge scenery, and wildlife makes this one of the stronger single day trips from Addis Ababa.

Lake Langano and Abiata-Shalla National Park
Lake Langano is a brown-water lake in the Rift Valley popular for swimming and lakeside relaxation, one of the few lakes near Addis Ababa considered free of bilharzia, while neighbouring Abiata-Shalla National Park protects two soda lakes known for large flocks of flamingos and pelicans. Together they combine a beach-style break with a wildlife-and-birding stop, but the distance means this is a long day or better as an overnight. Doing both properly in a single day is tight given the drive time alone.
