Getting Around Fiji 2026

Getting around Fiji: transport options, costs, and practical tips.

Fiji is a tropical paradise in the South Pacific, renowned for its pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, vibrant coral reefs, and warm Fijian hospitality. With over 300 islands featuring world-class diving, lush rainforests, and rich cultural heritage, Fiji offers unforgettable experiences for every type of traveler.

Public
Public buses are cheap and frequent on major Viti Levu routes but slow, crowded, and limited to the main highway. Good for the Nadi-Sigatoka-Coral Coast corridor; not practical for off-highway destinations or outer islands.
Taxi
Taxis are the most practical transport for tourists - widely available in Nadi, Suva, and Lautoka, metered (insist on meter use), and affordable by Western standards. The most reliable way to get around within towns.
Rental
Car rental is excellent value for self-driving Viti Levu's Queens Road and Kings Road circuits. 4WD highly recommended for the highlands or Vanua Levu. Drive on the LEFT; roads are paved on main routes but rough in rural areas.
Walking
Walkable within Nadi Town and Suva CBD but tropical heat, lack of footpaths on main roads, and scattered attractions make walking impractical for longer distances. Most attractions outside town require transport.

Transport tips

Travel smarter, not harder.

Tip

Always negotiate or confirm the taxi fare before getting in, or insist on the meter - airport taxis in particular have a history of overcharging tourists

Tip

Book ferry tickets to the Mamanuca and Yasawa Islands at least 24 hours in advance during June-August peak season as boats sell out

Tip

Domestic flights are the only practical way to reach Taveuni, Kadavu, and Savusavu quickly - ferry alternatives take 10-24 hours

Tip

Driving on Queens Road south to Coral Coast from Nadi is straightforward and scenic; the Kings Road north to Suva is longer with more potholes but less traffic

Tip

Port Denarau Marina is the hub for all Mamanuca and Yasawa island ferries and boat tours - arrive 30 minutes early for check-in
