Salvation Islands (Îles du Salut)
Three small islands off Kourou — Île Royale, Île Saint-Joseph, and Île du Diable (Devil's Island) — that formed part of France's 19th- and early 20th-century penal colony. Île Royale still has the old administration buildings, cell blocks, and a cemetery reclaimed by coconut palms and roaming agoutis; Île Saint-Joseph held the solitary-confinement block. Devil's Island itself, where Alfred Dreyfus was held, cannot be landed on because of the currents between it and Saint-Joseph, so it is seen only from the boat. The islands work as a full day out from Kourou, walkable at a relaxed pace with no vehicles.

Guiana Space Center, Kourou
The Guiana Space Center is the launch site used by the European Space Agency, France's CNES, and Arianespace, chosen for this stretch of Kourou coastline because of its near-equatorial position. On non-launch days, guided tours take visitors past the Ariane launch pads and through the site's museum, which covers the history of French and European rocketry from the early Diamant launches through the Ariane program. On the rare day when a launch is scheduled, the center opens public viewing areas and the whole town of Kourou reorients around it.

Cacao Hmong Village Sunday Market
Cacao is an agricultural village settled by Hmong refugees who arrived in French Guiana in the late 1970s after fleeing Laos, and it remains the most visible Hmong community in the territory. The Sunday market is the village's weekly focal point, with stalls selling produce grown on the surrounding smallholdings, Hmong noodle and rice dishes cooked to order, and embroidered textiles. It's a small, single-morning market rather than a full day's sightseeing, so it pairs naturally with a stop at the nearby Trésor reserve on the same D5 road.

Réserve du Trésor & Saut Morin
The Trésor Nature Reserve protects a stretch of lowland rainforest along the D5 near Roura, with a signed boardwalk and trail system that makes it one of the more accessible spots to walk through primary Guianese forest without a guide. Saut Morin is a set of rapids on a nearby river reached by a further stretch of trail or track, where the water pools enough for swimming. Together they suit visitors who want a genuine forest walk and a swim rather than a museum or ruin.

Lac de Petit Saut Wildlife Tour
Petit Saut is an artificial reservoir created by a hydroelectric dam on the Sinnamary River, and the flooding left standing dead trees rising out of the water across much of the lake, which turned out to concentrate wildlife in an unusual way. Boat tours on the lake are the main way to see it, drifting among the drowned tree snags to spot caimans, howler and capuchin monkeys, and a wide range of birds that use the dead trees as perches. It's a wildlife-watching day rather than a hiking or historical one.

Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni & Camp de la Transportation
Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni sits on the Maroni River facing Suriname and was the entry point through which convicts were processed into French Guiana's penal colony system. The Camp de la Transportation, right in town, is the surviving processing camp where new arrivals were registered, examined, and assigned before being sent onward to labor camps or the Salvation Islands; its cell blocks and the camp gate are preserved and open to visitors. The town itself has a run of colonial-era administrative buildings from the same period, giving the visit a broader sense of the bagne system beyond just the islands.

Les Hattes Beach Turtle Watching
Les Hattes, near the village of Awala-Yalimapo at the mouth of the Maroni River, is one of the world's most important nesting beaches for leatherback sea turtles, with females hauling out at night to lay eggs during the nesting season. The village of Awala-Yalimapo itself is a Kali'na Amerindian community, and turtle-watching visits are generally organized in coordination with local guides who know how to approach nesting turtles without disturbing them. Because the drive from Cayenne runs to roughly 3.5 hours, this is realistically an overnight rather than a single-day trip.

Saül Jungle Village (Overnight/Multi-day)
Saül is a small village deep in French Guiana's interior rainforest, reachable only by light aircraft since no road connects it to the coast. It grew out of the territory's gold-mining history and now functions mainly as a base for forest hikers and researchers, with a network of marked trails radiating out from the village into largely undisturbed primary rainforest. This is not a single-day destination given the flight logistics; it's built around at least one overnight stay, typically several.

Rent a car for maximum flexibility — the N1 coastal highway is well-paved and safe for self-driving
Start the Salvation Islands day very early — the ferry departs Kourou at exactly 07:30 and will not wait. Be at the port by 07:00.
