Guadeloupe is an overseas department and region of France in the Caribbean, shaped like a butterfly formed by two main islands — volcanic Basse-Terre to the west and coral-limestone Grande-Terre to the east — connected by a narrow channel crossed by the Rivière Salée. Guadeloupe's nightlife ranges from relaxed beachside Ti Punch sessions to lively clubs playing zouk, gwo ka, and dancehall. The most concentrated bar and club scene is in Le Gosier (Marina Bas du Fort area) and Saint-François. Pointe-à-Pitre has a Friday and Saturday night bar scene around the marina. Music venues occasionally host live gwo ka sessions — Guadeloupe's UNESCO-recognised drum tradition. Nightlife starts late by Caribbean standards; bars don't fill until 22:00, clubs until midnight or later.
