Mount Bénara is the highest peak on Mayotte, rising to around 660 metres in the centre of Grande-Terre, and the island's best-known summit hike. The trailhead is signposted near the village of Combani, reached by public minibus taxi from Mamoudzou. The route climbs through farmland and secondary forest into more intact tropical vegetation, with sections of steep, sometimes slippery trail, roots and rock. Hikers can expect shade for much of the ascent, birdsong, lemurs such as the brown lemur in the forest, and glimpses of the island's interior hills. From the summit, on a clear day, the view takes in much of Mayotte, the lagoon, the barrier reef and sometimes Petite-Terre in the distance, which is why the dry season is preferred. A round trip usually takes four to six hours depending on fitness and conditions, so hikers should start by 07:00 to finish before the afternoon heat and clouds that build over the peak. Access is free, and there are no services on the trail, so water, snacks, a hat and sturdy footwear are essential. Mobile coverage can be patchy, and hiking with a local guide is wise for first-time visitors or in wet conditions, since trails can be poorly marked in places. The wet season from November to April brings mud and leeches, while April to October gives clearer views and firmer ground. Photographers do best at the summit viewpoint early in the day, before haze and cloud reduce visibility. The trail is rarely crowded, even on weekends.
