Dziani Dzaha is a volcanic crater lake on Petite-Terre, the small island of Mayotte reached from Grande-Terre by the barge to Dzaoudzi. The lake fills a crater rim and is known for its milky green-turquoise water, caused by a high mineral content and dense algae, which contrasts sharply with the surrounding vegetation and dark rim.

The classic frame is taken from the crater edge looking down across the water, with the rim and trees as foreground and the lagoon sometimes visible beyond. Light direction matters: early morning from about 07:00 to 08:30 brings soft light and, on humid days, mist over the water, while late afternoon from 16:00 to 17:30 gives warm colour on the crater walls. Midday sun saturates the water but flattens contrast and creates glare. The dry season from June to October gives the most reliable clear skies, whereas rain can mute colour. The site is usually quiet, with a few visitors at any time, so tripod positions on the rim are rarely contested. Visitors should stay on marked paths and respect the fragile shoreline, and swimming is not recommended because of the water chemistry. A standard 24 to 70 mm lens captures the whole crater scene, and a polariser reduces surface glare and deepens the colour. A drone would give an aerial view, but French aviation rules apply and authorisation from the aviation authority is needed before flying; local restrictions near protected areas and Dzaoudzi airport should also be checked. Tripods are generally unrestricted for personal use. Facilities are limited at the lake, so water and sun protection should be carried. The walk includes some uneven ground and a short climb.
