Èze is a medieval perched village at 427 metres above sea level on a rocky spur overlooking the Mediterranean, in the commune of Èze in Alpes-Maritimes, within Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. The village sits on the Moyenne Corniche road between Nice and Monaco, approximately 12 km east of Nice and 8 km west of Monaco.

The summit, reached through narrow cobbled village streets, arrives at the Jardin Exotique (botanical garden) and the ruins of a medieval castle terrace commanding an unobstructed 180-degree view — from Cap Ferrat in the west to Cap Martin and the Italian border in the east.

At dawn in summer, the east-southeast orientation of the main sea view from the garden terrace means the sun rises approximately in the direction the lens faces. This produces a front-lit Mediterranean scene: the sea turns from black to deep blue to gold as the sun lifts off the horizon, and the coastal villages far below — Èze-Bord-de-Mer, Beaulieu-sur-Mer, and the promontories toward Cap Ferrat — catch the first warm light across the water surface. For wide compositions, the contrast between ancient stone crenellations in the foreground and the glittering sea 400 metres below defines the image.

The Jardin Exotique charges admission (approximately €6–€7 per adult in 2024) and opens at 09:00 in standard season. The free public belvedere just outside the garden entrance, accessible from approximately 06:00 when the village paths are open, provides an excellent alternative view at no cost. Without garden access, this belvedere captures the essential composition.

The village streets are steep, narrow, and cobbled throughout. Pre-dawn navigation requires a head torch. There are no restrooms in the upper village before 09:00. The village is car-free above the parking area at the base; all camera equipment must be carried on foot to the summit. Tour groups begin arriving by coach from 09:00 onward, making the dawn window significantly calmer and more photogenic. May through October offers the clearest sea views; winter occasionally provides atmospheric mist over the Riviera valleys for layered compositions.
