Balos Lagoon Viewpoint

The Balos Lagoon viewpoint sits above the lagoon at the northwestern tip of Crete, in the Chania region, at the top of the path that descends to the beach. It provides a wide aerial view of the pink-tinged sand, the shallow turquoise lagoon, the Tigani peninsula, and Gramvousa island with its Venetian fortress. It is one of the most photographed landscapes in Greece, and the view shows colours that are less visible from the beach itself.

Aerial view of pink sand beach, turquoise lagoon, and Gramvousa Island. One of Greece's most stunning natural landscapes. Viewpoint before beach descent offers best perspective.

The viewpoint is reached by driving along a rough dirt road from Kaliviani to the car park at the top, which takes about forty-five minutes from Kissamos, with the last stretch on gravel. From the car park, a short stroll leads to the lookout, with a railing at the edge. The descent to the beach, a steep path of about fifteen to twenty minutes, starts here, and the climb back takes longer. The best light is in the morning, between about 9 and 11 AM, when the sun is high enough to bring out the turquoise and the pink tones in the water. Afternoons can create glare, and low sun later in the day softens the colours. Wide-angle lenses capture the whole bay, while a telephoto compresses the sandbars and the island. A polarising filter reduces reflections on the water. The viewpoint is exposed with no shade, and the wind can be strong, so a hat, water and a windbreaker help. The car park fills by late morning in July and August, and queues build on the dirt road. Arriving early gives a calmer view and easier parking. Visitors should keep to the paths, as the surrounding area is protected under the Natura 2000 network. A small parking fee usually applies, and rental car contracts often exclude damage on the dirt road, so some visitors take the boat or a shuttle instead. The viewpoint takes about thirty minutes to enjoy and photograph.
