Getting Around Honduras 2026

From airport to backstreets: the full transport picture for Honduras, with current fares.

Honduras is a vibrant Central American nation known for its pristine Caribbean beaches, ancient Mayan ruins at Copán, and the world-class diving paradise of the Bay Islands. From the colonial architecture of historic cities to lush cloud forests and coral reefs, Honduras offers authentic adventures for every traveler.

Public
Public buses in Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula are very cheap ($0.30-0.50) but overcrowded, poorly timed, and not recommended for tourists due to safety concerns. Rapiditos (shared minibuses) slightly better but same caveats.
Taxi
Registered taxis widely available but must negotiate price before entering or risk overcharging. Uber and InDriver are significantly safer and more transparent in Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula. Neither app available on Bay Islands.
Rental
Rental cars are practical for exploring mainland Honduras, especially the western circuit (Copán, Gracias, Lake Yojoa). Roads between major cities are good quality. 4WD recommended for rural areas and rainy season. Avoid driving at night.
Walking
Bay Islands (Roatán West End, Utila) are walkable and safe for pedestrians. Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula historic centers can be explored on foot by day in tourist zones, but require caution and local advice on safe areas.

Transport tips

Travel smarter, not harder.

Tip

Download Uber and InDriver apps before arriving in Honduras — they are significantly safer than hailing street taxis in Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula

Tip

Book luxury bus seats (Hedman Alas, Viana) in advance online — departures fill quickly on weekends and around Semana Santa

Tip

Take the morning ferry to Bay Islands (La Ceiba to Roatán 9:30 AM, Utila 9:30 AM) to avoid rougher afternoon seas; sea sickness bags are provided but morning crossings are smoother

Tip

Rental cars at Roatán airport are expensive ($70-120/day) and traffic on the island is one-road — consider water taxis between West End and West Bay ($3) as a cheap alternative

Tip

Water taxis on Roatán run frequently between West End and West Bay ($3 each way) and are faster than road taxis — use them to avoid the road between the two main tourist areas

Tip

Domestic flights between mainland and Bay Islands are the fastest option (45-60 min vs 4+ hours including ferry); book in advance as capacity is small on CM Airlines and Aerolineas Sosa
