Matera (Basilicata)
Matera is a cave city cut into two limestone ravines, the Sasso Barisano and Sasso Caveoso, where families lived in rock dwellings until forced resettlement in the 1950s and where many of those dwellings are now restored as homes, hotels and museums. It sits just over the regional border in Basilicata rather than Apulia itself, which is why it needs a full day rather than an afternoon add-on to a Bari trip. Isole Tremiti
The Tremiti Islands are a small archipelago off the Gargano coast, mostly visited as a boat-based day out rather than a place to explore on foot in any depth - San Domino is the green, pine-covered island with most of the swimming coves, while San Nicola holds the fortified old town and abbey. The appeal is the water: clear coves reachable by short boat hops or a walking trail, not a town to wander. Because access is by hydrofoil, the day is really structured around boat departure times rather than your own pace.

Lecce by Train

Unlike the coastal or trulli day trips, this is a city day of churches, a Roman amphitheatre sitting below street level in the main piazza, and streets to wander rather than a single sight. Both are short train rides from Bari and from each other, so the day is easy to structure around the rail timetable rather than a car.

This is the longest of the day trips from Bari at around 2h30 by car, so it works best as a coast-and-town day rather than an attempt to also cover the wider Gargano peninsula. The distance means it rewards either an early start or treating it as closer to an overnight than a rushed single day.

As the southern end of the Salento peninsula, this trip is really about the combination of a compact old town and the stretch of coastline around it, best reached via Lecce rather than directly from Bari given the distance. The old town is small enough to walk in a few hours, leaving the rest of the day for the coast.
