Capri Island

  • DurationFull day or overnight
  • AdmissionAdult Free (ferry from Naples/Sorrento $20-25 each way) · Child Ferry varies by age

Capri is a 10-square-kilometre island in the Bay of Naples, Campania, separated from the mainland by 5 kilometres of water and accessible by hydrofoil (35 minutes) or ferry (50 minutes) from Naples, or by ferry (20 minutes) from Sorrento. The island rises steeply from the sea on all sides, forming two distinct settlements: the main town of Capri (lower, more commercial, centred on the Piazzetta) and Anacapri (higher, calmer, reached by bus or the Seggiovia chairlift).

This glamorous island in the Bay of Naples has attracted artists, writers, and celebrities for centuries with its dramatic cliffs, designer boutiques, and chic atmosphere. Take a boat tour around the island, ride the chairlift to Monte Solaro, or stroll through the Gardens of Augustus.

The Piazzetta — officially Piazza Umberto I — is the social heart of Capri town, a small square of cafe terraces overlooking the marina, famous for its conspicuous celebrity-watching. The Gardens of Augustus, created by the German industrialist Friedrich Alfred Krupp in the late 19th century, offer terraced viewpoints over the Faraglioni rocks — three dramatic sea stacks that are the island's most photographed landmark. The Faraglioni can be approached by rented motorboat or on the island circumnavigation tour that departs from Marina Grande and includes the Blue Grotto, the sea arch of Arco Naturale, and the Grotta Verde. The Villa Jovis on the island's eastern tip was Emperor Tiberius's principal residence in the final decade of his life (27–37 AD) and preserves Roman cisterns and foundations with views across to the Sorrento peninsula. Monte Solaro, accessible by the Anacapri chairlift, rises 589 metres and provides the highest viewpoint on the island — across the Bay of Naples, Vesuvius, the Amalfi Coast, and on clear days to the Pontine Islands. The chairlift ascent takes 13 minutes and is one of the simplest and most rewarding activities on the island.

Accessibility

The funicular from Marina Grande to Capri town is accessible. The Piazzetta and main shopping street via Camerelle are largely flat but cobbled. Anacapri's main street is accessible. The chairlift to Monte Solaro is not suitable for wheelchair users. The Gardens of Augustus and Villa Jovis involve steps and uneven paths.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get to Capri from Naples or Sorrento?

Hydrofoils (aliscafi) from Naples Molo Beverello take 35 to 45 minutes and run frequently. Ferries from Sorrento take 20 to 25 minutes. From Naples, ferries also depart from Calata di Massa. Book return tickets on arrival — last ferries return by around 8 PM in summer.

Is Capri worth visiting as a day trip?

Yes, a day trip covers the Piazzetta, Gardens of Augustus, Monte Solaro chairlift, and a boat trip. However, Capri's atmosphere is completely different after the day-trip boats leave around 5 PM — an overnight stay transforms the experience and allows access to the island's best restaurants.

How do I get around the island?

The funicular runs from Marina Grande to Capri town (3 minutes). Buses connect Capri town, Anacapri, and the beach at Marina Piccola. The Anacapri chairlift reaches Monte Solaro. Taxis are available but expensive. Much of the island is best explored on foot along well-marked paths.
