The Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta in Siena is one of Italy's supreme examples of Italian Gothic architecture, with construction spanning from 1215 to 1380. Its exterior striped facade of white and greenish-black marble, studded with polychrome mosaics and sculptures, sets the tone for the entire building. The facade was designed by Giovanni Pisano, who also created many of the statues on the lower level — the originals are now in the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo; what stands today are replicas. Inside, the alternating black-and-white marble stripe pattern continues through the columns and walls, creating a hypnotic geometric rhythm unique in Italian church architecture. The floor is the cathedral's most exceptional feature: 56 marble inlay panels covering the entire nave, created by Siena's finest artists over a period of two centuries (1369–1547), depicting biblical narratives, allegorical figures, and the Sibylline books. The panels are only fully uncovered between mid-August and late October — at other times, many are protected by boards. The Piccolomini Library, entered from the left nave, contains 10 large frescoes by Pinturicchio (1502–1508) depicting the life of Pope Pius II with intense colour and detail. The Baptistery of San Giovanni beneath the cathedral houses a hexagonal font with bronze panels by Donatello and Ghiberti. The Opa Si Pass provides access to the cathedral, museum, baptistery, crypt, and the Facciatone — the unfinished facade of the never-completed nave extension — from which panoramic Tuscan views reward the climb.

When to visit

August to October for the fully uncovered marble floor, which transforms the visit. Morning light (before noon) enters the nave's south clerestory windows at an angle that illuminates the marble panels most dramatically. Visit Siena on a weekday to avoid the Palio-season weekend crowds in July and August.

Accessibility

The cathedral nave is accessible to wheelchair users via the main entrance or a side ramp. The Piccolomini Library is on the same level. The Facciatone requires climbing stairs and is not accessible. The Baptistery is accessed via steps from the exterior of the cathedral.

Frequently asked questions

When is the marble floor of Siena Cathedral uncovered?

The full 56-panel marble floor is uncovered approximately mid-August through late October each year. Outside this period, most panels are protected by wooden boards, though a rotating selection is typically left visible. Check the Opa Si website for exact dates each year.

What is the Opa Si Pass and what does it include?

The Opa Si Pass covers the cathedral, Piccolomini Library, Baptistery, Crypt, Facciatone viewpoint, and Museo dell'Opera del Duomo. It represents significant savings over purchasing individual entry and is valid for 3 days. It is available online and at the ticket office in Piazza del Duomo.

How long does a visit to Siena Cathedral take?

The cathedral interior with the Piccolomini Library takes 1 to 1.5 hours. Adding the museum, baptistery, and Facciatone climb makes a 3 to 4-hour visit to the full Duomo complex.
