Friuli Venezia Giulia has three distinct climate zones across its compact territory. The Adriatic coast and Trieste experience a Mediterranean-influenced climate with hot dry summers (28–32°C / 82–90°F) and mild winters (5–10°C / 41–50°F), frequently interrupted by the Bora — a fierce northeastern wind reaching 100+ km/h. The Friulian plains have a continental climate with hot summers, cold foggy winters, and year-round rainfall. The Alpine zone (Carnia, Julian Alps, Tarvisio) has cool summers (18–22°C / 64–72°F) and heavy snowfall from November to April. The Carso limestone plateau above Trieste receives less rainfall than adjacent areas but the Bora creates extreme wind-chill conditions.
