Italy captivates travelers with its unparalleled blend of ancient history, Renaissance art, and world-renowned cuisine. From the romantic canals of Venice to the ancient ruins of Rome, the rolling hills of Tuscany to the dramatic Amalfi Coast, Italy offers diverse experiences across its varied regions.
Italy's climate varies dramatically from north to south. Northern Italy (Milan, Venice, Turin) has a continental climate with cold winters and hot summers; the Dolomites receive heavy snowfall. Central Italy (Rome, Florence, Bologna) enjoys a Mediterranean climate with mild winters and warm dry summers. Southern Italy and Sicily experience hot dry summers reaching 35°C+ and mild winters with occasional rain. The coastlines are cooler in summer and warmer in winter than inland.

The seasons
What to expect in each part of the year.
Spring
Months: Mar-May
Italy's most beautiful season — wildflowers on hillsides, mild temperatures 12-22°C, occasional rain, and far fewer tourists than summer. Venice and Tuscany are stunning. Snow can persist in the Alps until May.
Summer
Months: Jun-Aug
Hot and dry throughout, especially in south (Sicily 35-40°C). Peak tourist season with maximum crowds and prices. Northern lakes and Dolomites more comfortable (22-28°C). Italians vacation en masse in August — major cities quieter but beaches packed.
