Poseidon Thermal Gardens, Ischia

The Poseidon Thermal Gardens at Forio on the island of Ischia occupy a dramatic terraced hillside on the western coast of this volcanic island at the northern entrance to the Bay of Naples. The complex encompasses 22 open-air thermal pools fed by natural volcanic springs, each maintained at a different temperature ranging from approximately 14°C to 40°C to suit a range of therapeutic and recreational purposes. The pools are set within lush Mediterranean gardens planted with bougainvillea, palms, lemon trees, and aromatic herbs, descending in tiers toward a private beach on the Tyrrhenian Sea. Ischia has been celebrated for its volcanic thermal waters since Greek colonisation in the eighth century BC, and the Poseidon gardens are among the island's largest and most established thermal establishments. Beyond simple bathing, the complex offers Kneipp hydrotherapy walking channels, fango volcanic mud therapy, massage, and aesthetic treatments administered by trained therapists in a dedicated spa centre. The venue is a day-visit facility: a single entry ticket covers access to all pools, the gardens, and the private beach, while spa treatments are booked separately on arrival or in advance. The complex operates seasonally, typically from April through October, following the rhythm of Ischia's warmer months. Getting to Ischia requires a ferry or hydrofoil crossing from Naples Mergellina or Pozzuoli — a scenic sea journey of thirty to ninety minutes depending on the vessel. Sun loungers and umbrellas are available for hire throughout the gardens, and a restaurant and snack bar serve meals and refreshments across the day.
