Miyazaki is Japan's least car-free-friendly major prefecture for tourists. A rental car is the single best investment for exploring its scattered highlights — Takachiho Gorge, the Nichinan Coast, Cape Toi, and Ebino Kogen are all difficult or impossible to reach efficiently by public transport. Miyazaki City itself has a local bus network and JR train service. The main gateway is Miyazaki Bougainvillea Airport (KMI), served by flights from Tokyo, Osaka, and other major Japanese cities.
