Saga is Kyushu's smallest prefecture but one of Japan's richest for traditional crafts, hot springs, and ancient history. Home to the 400-year porcelain traditions of Arita and Imari, the dramatic vermillion Yutoku Inari Shrine, the sprawling Yayoi-period Yoshinogari Historical Park, and the castle town of Karatsu with its famous morning squid market.
Saga Prefecture is a compact, rural corner of Kyushu best explored with a mix of JR Kyushu trains and a rental car. Saga City sits on the JR Nagasaki Main Line roughly 40 minutes from Hakata (Fukuoka) by limited express, making it an easy day-trip base. Saga Airport (HSG), officially Kyushu Saga International Airport, is 8 km southwest of Saga City on the edge of the Ariake Sea and mainly serves Haneda and a handful of Asian cities. The JR Karatsu Line and JR Chikuhi Line connect Saga City to Karatsu and the Genkai Sea coast, while the Sasebo Line and the Nishikyushu Shinkansen (from Takeo-Onsen) serve Ureshino, Takeo, and Arita in the prefecture's west. Local bus coverage (Showa Bus, Saga City Community Bus) is thin outside town centres, so a rental car is close to essential for Yoshinogari, Ureshino Onsen, Takeo, and the Ariake Sea tidal-flat area.

At Takeo-Onsen Station, the shinkansen platform is a same-platform, opposite-side transfer from the Kamome limited express — allow about 5 minutes to change trains
