Saitama Prefecture is Tokyo's underrated northern neighbor — a landlocked prefecture where the Edo-period streets of Kawagoe, the world's largest railway museum collection, bonsai gardens tended for a century, and the moss-phlox hills of Chichibu sit within an hour of the capital, all at a fraction of Tokyo's crowds and prices.
Saitama Prefecture has a humid subtropical climate closely mirroring nearby Tokyo, with hot, humid summers and mild, dry winters. Being inland on the Kanto Plain without the moderating effect of the coast, Saitama — especially the Kumagaya area — records some of the highest summer temperatures in Japan, occasionally exceeding 40°C (104°F). The rainy season (tsuyu) runs through June into mid-July, followed by a hot, humid peak summer and a typhoon-influenced early autumn (August–October). Winters are cold but generally dry and sunny, with only occasional light snow.
