Shimane Prefecture lies along the San'in coast of western Honshu, home to Izumo Taisha, one of Japan's oldest and most revered Shinto shrines, and Matsue Castle, one of only twelve original castles remaining in the country. Known in Japanese mythology as the land where the gods gather each October, Shimane blends ancient shrine culture, samurai heritage, celebrated gardens, and a quiet, uncrowded coastline far from Japan's typical tourist circuit.
Matsue and Izumo City form Shimane's transport core, linked by the JR San'in Main Line and the private Ichibata Electric Railway. Shimane has no direct Shinkansen service — the nearest bullet train stop is Okayama on the Sanyo Shinkansen, from which the JR West Limited Express Yakumo runs inland through the Chugoku mountains to Yonago, Matsue, and Izumo City. Two small airports serve the prefecture: Izumo Enmusubi Airport (IZO) near Izumo City, and Yonago Airport just across the border in Tottori, both within about 30–45 minutes of Matsue by bus. Rural Shimane — Iwami Ginzan, Tsuwano, Mount Sanbe, and the Oki Islands — is served by infrequent local buses and ferries, making a rental car close to essential for travellers who want flexibility beyond the Matsue–Izumo corridor.

Travel smarter, not harder.
There is no Shinkansen station in Shimane — plan the Okayama transfer (Sanyo Shinkansen to Limited Express Yakumo) into arrival timing, allowing at least 20–30 min to change platforms
Reserve Yakumo limited express seats in advance during Golden Week, Obon, and Kamiarizuki season, as unreserved cars fill quickly
Rent a car for Iwami Ginzan, Mount Sanbe, and the San'in coast beyond Matsue/Izumo — rural bus frequency (often hourly or less) makes multi-stop days difficult without one
Confirm Oki Islands ferry sailings directly with Oki Kisen before travelling August–October; typhoon-related cancellations are the most common disruption
The Ichibata Railway one-day pass (¥1,600/$10.70) is worthwhile only if making 2+ trips between Matsue and Izumo Taisha in a day; otherwise buy single tickets
