Toyama Prefecture sits on the Sea of Japan coast of central Honshu, framed by the dramatic Tateyama mountain range and the deep waters of Toyama Bay. Toyama City and its JR/Ainokaze Toyama Railway hub, Toyama Station, sit at the center of the prefecture's transport network. The Hokuriku Shinkansen connects Toyama directly to Tokyo (about 2 hours) and to Kanazawa and Osaka-bound services in the other direction, making Toyama one of the more easily reached prefectures in rural Japan. Toyama Airport (TOY), about 10 km from central Toyama City, adds a short domestic flight option to Tokyo Haneda. Within Toyama City, the compact Manyosen-style Toyama City Tram Line and the Toyama Light Rail (Portram) cover the urban core and the historic Iwase waterfront, while the private Toyama Chihou Railway runs inland toward Unazuki Onsen and the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route gateway. Reaching Takaoka, Himi, Johana, and Gokayama is straightforward by the Ainokaze Toyama Railway and JR local lines, but a rental car is close to essential for flexible access to Gokayama's mountain villages and the upper reaches of the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route outside the cable car/bus corridor.

Toyama–Kanazawa by Shinkansen is only 20–25 minutes, so treating Kanazawa as a same-day add-on from Toyama is very common and efficient
