Japan Weather & Climate Guide 2026

Month-by-month weather, best times to visit, and what to pack for Japan.

Japan seamlessly blends ancient traditions with state-of-the-art modernity, offering travelers everything from serene temples and historic castles to neon-lit cities and world-class cuisine. From the snow-capped peaks of Hokkaido to the tropical beaches of Okinawa, this island nation captivates visitors with its rich culture, impeccable hospitality, and stunning natural beauty.

Japan's climate varies dramatically across its 3,000-kilometer length from sub-Arctic Hokkaido in the north to subtropical Okinawa in the south. The main islands of Honshu, Kyushu, and Shikoku experience four distinct seasons with hot, humid summers influenced by Pacific monsoons, cold winters with significant snowfall in mountain and northern regions, and famously spectacular spring (cherry blossom) and autumn (fall foliage) seasons. Tokyo has a temperate climate with rainy season in June-July, hot summers (35°C peak), and cold but relatively dry winters with occasional light snowfall. The typhoon season runs July-October with Okinawa and southwestern Japan most affected.
