Yamagata Prefecture is a mountain-ringed prefecture on the Sea of Japan side of the Tohoku region, home to the cliffside temple of Yamadera, the gas-lit hot spring town of Ginzan Onsen, the ice-crusted "snow monster" trees of Zao Onsen, and the sacred pilgrimage peaks of Dewa Sanzan — a prefecture built around hot springs, cherry orchards, and centuries of mountain worship.
Yamagata's evening scene is anchored by Yamagata City, the prefecture's capital and main nightlife hub, split between the historic Nanokamachi strip (including Yamagata's only yokocho alley, Hottonaru Yokocho) and the livelier, more modern bar cluster near JR Yamagata Station. Outside the capital, nightlife is quiet and onsen-centered — Ginzan, Zao, Kaminoyama, and Atsumi empty out early, with the evening's main activity being a second onsen soak and a slow walk through town in a ryokan-provided yukata beneath gas-lit or snow-lantern streets.
