Kuwait is a modern Gulf state blending traditional Arabian culture with contemporary architecture and bustling souqs. From the iconic Kuwait Towers to the vast expanse of its golden deserts, this small nation offers rich history, world-class museums, and authentic Middle Eastern hospitality.
- Public
- Kuwait has a basic public bus network (KPTC) but it is not practical for tourists — limited English signage, infrequent service, and no metro system. Buses cost KD 0.25-0.50 and are used mainly by the large expat worker community.
- Taxi
- Taxis are the most practical tourist transport — Careem and Uber apps provide reliable, metered service across Kuwait City at reasonable prices. Street taxis are also available but meters may not be used; agree fare in advance. Average city ride KD 3-6.
- Rental
- Car rental is excellent for exploring outside Kuwait City — particularly for Failaka Island ferry access, Al Jahra, Mutla Ridge, and southern desert areas. Roads are well-maintained and driving is on the right. Parking generally easy outside peak hours.
- Walking
- Kuwait City is not pedestrian-friendly — the city was designed entirely around cars, distances between sites are significant, and extreme heat from May to September makes walking hazardous. Walkable areas include the Arabian Gulf Street corniche, Souq Al-Mubarakiya (internally), and Salmiya Marina Crescent.

Transport tips
Travel smarter, not harder.
Download Careem or Uber before arriving — these apps are far more reliable than hailing street taxis and pricing is transparent
Careem is the dominant rideshare in Kuwait and accepts both cash and credit card payment in-app
Public buses display numbers but no English route information — stick to taxis and rideshare apps unless you have local advice on specific routes
Driving in Kuwait requires an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your home country license — arrange this before travel
Fuel is extremely cheap in Kuwait at approximately KD 0.105/liter ($0.35/liter or $1.30/US gallon) making car rental very economical for touring
Rush hour traffic is severe: 7-9 AM, 1-3 PM, and 5-8 PM — avoid major ring roads during these times or add significant travel time
Parking is generally free and available in most areas but the areas around Avenues Mall and 360 Mall can be difficult on Thursday and Friday evenings
