Kuang Si Falls
A multi-tiered waterfall dropping through a series of turquoise limestone pools before reaching a single high main cascade, set in forest south of Luang Prabang. The colour comes from dissolved calcium carbonate, and several of the lower pools are shallow enough to swim in. It's the most popular day trip from Luang Prabang, so the character of the visit depends heavily on how early you arrive relative to tour buses.

Pak Ou Caves
Two limestone caves set in a cliff face at the point where the Nam Ou river meets the Mekong, both packed with thousands of Buddha statues left by pilgrims and local villagers over centuries. The lower cave, Tham Ting, is reachable on foot from the river landing and viewable in daylight; the upper cave, Tham Theung, sits higher up a flight of steps and requires a flashlight. The journey there is a slow river trip that is as much the point of the day as the caves themselves.

Nong Khiaw
A small town on the Nam Ou river ringed by sheer limestone karst peaks, reached by a scenic road trip north from Luang Prabang. It works either as a long day trip focused on the viewpoint hike and river, or as a base for continuing further upriver to Muang Ngoi by boat. The karst scenery here is denser and more dramatic than anything close to Luang Prabang itself.

4000 Islands (Si Phan Don) from Pakse
Si Phan Don is a stretch of the Mekong near the Cambodian border where the river splits around thousands of islands and sandbars, with Don Det and Don Khon the two most visited. As a day trip from Pakse it's a long day given the distance, but it covers waterfalls, the remains of a French colonial railway, and one of the few places on the Mekong where Irrawaddy dolphins are still occasionally seen.
