Getting Around Liberia 2026

Transport in Liberia decoded — what to use for which journey, and what each option costs.

Liberia, West Africa's oldest republic, offers pristine rainforests, beautiful Atlantic beaches, and rich cultural heritage. From the vibrant capital Monrovia to Sapo National Park's untouched wilderness, discover authentic African experiences.

Public
Poda-poda minibuses cover most Monrovia routes at very low fares ($0.25-1) but are crowded, slow, and routes are unclear to visitors. Not recommended for tourists except on established routes.
Taxi
Yellow taxis available throughout Monrovia by flagging or pre-arrangement. Always negotiate the fare before getting in. No meters. Shared taxis (cheaper) follow set routes.
Rental
Self-drive car rental is available ($60-100/day standard, $100-150/day 4WD) but road conditions and traffic make it challenging. A car hire with driver is often the better option at similar cost.
Walking
Central Monrovia is walkable in some areas (Mamba Point, Sinkor) but heat, humidity, poor footpaths, and safety concerns after dark limit walking. Always take taxis after dark.

Transport tips

Travel smarter, not harder.

Tip

Always negotiate your taxi fare before getting in - there are no meters and tourists are often quoted inflated prices

Tip

Pre-arrange airport transfers with your hotel before arrival - Roberts International Airport is 56km from Monrovia and roadside taxis are not recommended

Tip

Do not use three-wheeled motorized 'keke' rickshaws - they are extremely dangerous and accident rates are high

Tip

Poda-poda minibuses are the cheapest option but are very crowded - keep valuables in front pockets and be aware of pickpockets

Tip

For upcountry travel, hire a private 4WD vehicle with driver through your hotel - road conditions require experience

Tip

Bush taxis (shared cars) to upcountry destinations leave when full - expect to wait 30-90 minutes at departure points

Tip

Night driving in Liberia is dangerous due to poor street lighting, pedestrians on roads, and safety risks - always complete travel before dark
