Libya offers some of the Mediterranean's most spectacular Roman ruins, including the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Leptis Magna and Sabratha. From the historic medinas of Tripoli to the vast Sahara Desert, Libya combines ancient history with dramatic desert landscapes.
Libya has a Mediterranean climate along the northern coast — hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters — transitioning to Sahara Desert conditions in the south where summer temperatures can exceed 50°C. Tripoli enjoys warm, sunny weather for most of the year, with rain confined mainly to December through February. The Jabal Akhdar (Green Mountains) in the northeast receives more rainfall and has a cooler, more temperate climate.

The seasons
What to expect in each part of the year.
Spring
Months: Mar-May
The best season for Libya — warm and sunny with pleasant temperatures of 18-26°C in Tripoli. Wildflowers bloom in the Nafusa and Green Mountains. Low humidity and clear skies make conditions ideal for archaeological site visits.
Summer
Months: Jun-Aug
Hot and dry across northern Libya (Tripoli 30-36°C), scorchingly hot in the Sahara (40-50°C+). Coastal Mediterranean areas offer some relief with sea breezes. The ghibli (hot desert wind) can bring sudden sand clouds and extreme heat.
Fall
Months: Sep-Nov
Excellent season — temperatures moderate from the summer heat, ranging 22-30°C in September falling to 15-22°C in November. The desert regions are comfortable again from October for camping and exploration. Sea temperature remains warm for swimming until October.
Winter
Months: Dec-Feb
Mild and rainy on the coast (Tripoli 10-16°C). Rain, occasionally heavy, falls mainly in December and January. The Sahara Desert is at its most comfortable for camping and expeditions — daytime 15-25°C, cold nights dropping to 5°C or below in the south.
