When to hike

- Spring
- March to May brings blooming wildflowers and birdsong to Lithuanian forests. Trails can be muddy after snowmelt, particularly in March. Excellent for birdwatching during migration.
- Summer
- June to August is peak hiking season with long days (up to 17 hours of daylight in June). Forests are lush, lakes are swimmable. Mosquitoes and ticks are active — bring repellent.
- Fall
- September and October are the best months for hiking. Spectacular autumn foliage, cooler temperatures, and the famous mushroom and berry season make forests irresistible.
- Winter
- November to February: snow transforms Lithuania's forests into a peaceful winter wonderland. Some trails may be icy. Cross-country skiing possible in Aukštaitija and Dzūkija national parks.
Local hazards
What to watch out for on the trail.
Hazard: Ticks carrying Lyme disease and tick-borne encephalitis are common in Lithuanian forests spring through autumn — wear long sleeves, use repellent, and check for ticks after walks. TBE vaccination recommended for active hikers.
Hazard: Mosquitoes near lakes and wetlands can be aggressive in June and July — repellent is essential near Aukštaitija National Park lakes
Hazard: Mushroom picking: dozens of poisonous species grow in Lithuanian forests — only pick mushrooms you can identify with certainty or with a knowledgeable local guide
Hazard: Weather changes quickly, particularly on the Curonian Spit — strong Baltic winds and sudden rain are common. Pack a waterproof layer.
