Marrakech-Safi is a region in west-central Morocco stretching from the red-walled imperial city of Marrakech, at the foot of the snow-capped High Atlas Mountains, west across olive plains and argan forest to the Atlantic port towns of Safi and Essaouira. It combines Morocco's most visited historic Medina, UNESCO-listed since 1985, with mountain villages, desert day trips, and a laid-back fishing-and-ceramics coast.

Make your shots stand out.
Always ask permission before photographing people, particularly in the souks and tanneries. Offering 5–10 MAD as a polite tip is customary and appreciated.
Visit the souks in the morning (before 10:30) when natural light filters through the cane-covered roofs and vendors are freshly arranging their goods.
Majorelle Garden is most photogenic in the first 30 minutes after it opens. Book tickets online the day before to secure an early-morning entry slot.
Many riads and some cafés provide rooftop access — some for a small drink purchase. Rooftops are the best vantage for medina panoramas and tannery shots.
Carry a light, packable tripod. It is invaluable at dusk on rooftops, for reflection shots at Menara Gardens, and for night photography in Jemaa el-Fna.
A polarising filter dramatically cuts glare from the Essaouira ramparts, saturates the blue fishing boats, and improves sky contrast across the region.
The medina's rose-hued pisé walls glow most intensely during the 20 minutes before sunset — position yourself with a westward view for maximum colour impact.
Dress modestly (covered shoulders and knees) when entering mosques, madrasas, and tombs; this also helps you blend in and approach street subjects less intrusively.
Keep camera batteries and memory cards warm and dry. The High Atlas can be cold and damp; a sealed bag protects gear during the Toubkal ascent.
For Toubkal summit photography, arrange an overnight stay at Refuge du Toubkal to catch the pre-dawn start and photograph the Atlas range igniting at first light.
Use a telephoto zoom (70–200 mm) at the tanneries to compress the dye-vat scene and isolate workers without needing to descend to the pit level.
Essaouira is consistently windy — brace your tripod with your camera bag hung underneath, and protect lenses from salt-spray with a UV filter and lens hood.
