Bago (Pegu)
Bago was the capital of the Mon and later Toungoo-dynasty kingdoms before Yangon took over, and it packs a dense cluster of large-scale religious monuments into a compact town. The reclining Buddha at Shwethalyaung and the towering Shwemawdaw Pagoda are the reason to come; both are large, quiet during the middle of the day, and easy to combine with a couple of smaller sites. It is a full day out from Yangon rather than a half-day, because the drive alone is three hours round trip.

Kyaiktiyo (Golden Rock)
Kyaiktiyo is a granite boulder gilded in gold leaf, balanced on the edge of a cliff at the top of Mount Kyaiktiyo, with a small pagoda on top of the rock itself. It is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Myanmar, and the appeal is as much the pilgrimage journey up the mountain as the rock itself. Because of the distance and the truck ride up the mountain, this is a long day that works best as an overnight rather than a rushed there-and-back.

Amarapura and Ancient Cities from Mandalay
Amarapura was briefly the royal capital before the court moved to Mandalay, and it is now best known for U Bein Bridge, a long teak footbridge across Taungthaman Lake. Paired with nearby Sagaing and Inwa (Ava), this loop covers three former capitals in a single short trip from Mandalay, each with a different character - Amarapura for the bridge and lake, Sagaing for its hillside of stupas, Inwa for horse-cart rides among scattered ruins.

Minnanthu Hidden Temples, Bagan
Minnanthu is a village area on the eastern side of the Bagan plain where a cluster of smaller, less-visited temples sit among farmland rather than in the more heavily touristed central zone. The draw here is interior wall painting that survives in better condition in some of these smaller structures precisely because they see fewer visitors, plus the experience of reaching them by e-bike along dirt tracks rather than a paved tourist road.

Inle Lake Village Circuit from Nyaungshwe
Inle Lake is a shallow highland lake ringed by stilt-house villages, floating gardens and monasteries, and the standard way to see it is a full day by hired boat out of Nyaungshwe. The appeal is the lake life itself - leg-rowing Intha fishermen, floating tomato gardens, and villages built entirely on stilts over the water - rather than any single monument.
