A'DAM Lookout

A'DAM Lookout at Overhoeksplein 5 in Amsterdam Noord occupies the 20th and 21st floors of the A'DAM Tower, a 22-storey office building originally constructed in the 1960s as Shell's European headquarters. Following a major renovation and rebranding completed in 2016, the tower now houses creative industry offices, a boutique hotel, restaurants, a nightclub, and the public observation deck at its crown. The indoor and outdoor viewing platforms sit at approximately 70 metres above the IJ River, providing a full 360-degree panoramic view over Amsterdam's canal belt, the Central Station waterfront, the River IJ shipping lanes, and the green suburbs extending in all directions. On clear days the view extends to Haarlem and Utrecht. The outdoor terrace has an edge walkway and swing installation called 'Over the Edge' — a conventional adult swing suspended on a frame cantilevered beyond the building's roof, producing a sensation of swinging out over the city with nothing below. The swing requires a separate ticket supplement. The experience includes interactive floor and wall displays about Amsterdam's history and urban development. The journey to the tower requires only a five-minute free ferry ride from behind Amsterdam Centraal station across the IJ, making accessibility unusually straightforward. The deck remains open until 10:00 PM on most nights, and the combination of sunset and dusk views over the illuminated city is the peak visitor experience. The deck also offers a full-service bar and restaurant.
