Masaya & Masaya Volcano National Park
Masaya Volcano is one of the few volcanoes in the world where you can drive to a parking area right at the crater rim and look down into an active, smoking lava vent. The town of Masaya itself is known as the craft center of Nicaragua, built around a covered market selling hammocks, leather goods, and pottery from surrounding artisan villages. Pairing the two makes for a day that mixes geology with shopping and local food.

Laguna de Apoyo Crater Lake
Laguna de Apoyo is a volcanic crater lake between Granada and Masaya, filled with warm, mineral-clear water that sits in sharp contrast to Nicaragua's cooler Pacific beaches. It's a swimming and relaxing day rather than a sightseeing one - most visitors pick a lakeside spot, get in the water, and stay for a meal. Leon & Cerro Negro Volcano
Leon is Nicaragua's other great colonial city, less restored and more lived-in than Granada, with a cathedral that is the largest in Central America and a strong tradition of political murals from the Sandinista era. Cerro Negro, a short drive outside the city, is a young, completely black cinder-cone volcano that is the classic Nicaraguan volcano-boarding destination - visitors hike up the loose black slope and slide back down on a board. Combining the two makes for a long but rewarding day trip given the travel distance from Managua or Granada.

Ometepe Island Day Trip
Ometepe is an island in Lake Nicaragua formed by two volcanoes, Concepcion and Maderas, connected by a low isthmus. It's a genuinely long day trip given the bus-to-San Jorge-then-ferry logistics, and most of a single day there is realistically spent on one activity rather than covering the whole island. It suits travellers who want a taste of the island's volcanic scenery and rural pace without committing to an overnight stay.

Granada Isletas Boat Tour & Mombacho Volcano
This pairs two of Granada's closest attractions: a boat tour through Las Isletas, the 365 small islands scattered in Lake Nicaragua just off Granada formed by an ancient Mombacho eruption, and a visit up Mombacho Volcano itself, whose cloud forest crater rim overlooks the city and the lake. Because both sites are so close to Granada, it's one of the easier day trips to arrange on short notice, including as a half-day if time is tight.
