Kaesong and the DMZ
Kaesong is the former capital of the Koryo dynasty and one of the few North Korean cities that saw no aerial bombing during the Korean War, so it keeps a run of low tiled-roof houses that Pyongyang does not have. The day is really two stops: the old city itself, and the Demilitarized Zone a short drive further south, where the Joint Security Area at Panmunjom puts you inside the room where the 1953 armistice was signed, straddling the military demarcation line.

Mount Myohyang and International Friendship Exhibition
Mount Myohyang is a forested mountain range built around a state gift museum rather than a hiking destination in the ordinary sense - the International Friendship Exhibition is a bunker-like complex carved into the hillside holding tens of thousands of gifts presented to Kim Il Sung, Kim Jong Il and Kim Jong Un by foreign leaders and organizations. The mountain scenery and the nearby Pohyon Temple give the trip a second, quieter register once you're done with the exhibition halls.

Nampo and West Sea Barrage
Nampo is Pyongyang's port city on the west coast, and the day trip centers on the West Sea Barrage, an eight-kilometre dam across the mouth of the Taedong River built in the 1980s to separate the river from the Yellow Sea and control flooding and irrigation. It's presented to visitors as an engineering showpiece rather than a scenic stop, with an observation platform explaining the lock system that lets ships pass between river and sea.
