Volcanoes National Park
This is the Rwandan side of the Virunga volcanic range, home to roughly a third of the world's remaining mountain gorillas. A day here centers on gorilla trekking: rangers track a habituated family and lead a small group through montane forest until you reach them, then allow one hour of observation at close range. The terrain is steep, muddy volcanic slopes at altitude, and treks can run from under an hour to most of a day depending on where the gorillas are that morning.

Akagera National Park
Akagera is Rwanda's savanna park, a landscape of low hills, lakes and papyrus swamp along the Tanzanian border that is a deliberate contrast to the mountain forests elsewhere in the country. Reintroduced lions and rhinos mean it is now a genuine Big Five park, and game drives here move through open grassland rather than dense forest, so sightings tend to be easier and less physically demanding than gorilla or chimp trekking. It works well as a full-day game drive, either self-driven or with a park guide, or as an overnight with a boat trip on Lake Ihema added.

Nyanza - King's Palace Museum
Nyanza was the seat of the Rwandan monarchy before colonial administration relocated the capital, and the King's Palace Museum reconstructs the traditional royal residence alongside a separate modern palace building from the 1930s. It is a compact, easily digestible cultural stop rather than a full day of activity, built around a reconstructed thatched royal enclosure and the Inyambo, the long-horned royal cattle kept and paraded on site, whose keepers sing to them as part of the visit.

Nyungwe National Park
Nyungwe is one of Africa's oldest montane rainforests, and the main draw is chimpanzee trekking alongside a canopy walkway suspended above the forest floor. It is a wetter, denser, more physically demanding environment than the savanna parks, and because of the drive distance from Kigali it is realistically a two-day trip for most visitors rather than a single long day, though a very early departure can compress it into one very full day if only the canopy walk is the goal.

Lake Kivu - Gisenyi (Rubavu)
Gisenyi (officially Rubavu) sits on the Rwandan shore of Lake Kivu, one of Africa's Great Lakes, and functions as the country's main lakeside resort town. The pace here is deliberately slower than the parks - swimming, lakeside walks and boat trips replace trekking - and it works well either as a standalone relaxation day or as the tail end of a loop that includes Volcanoes National Park, since the two are connected by a scenic lakeshore road.
