Rimini

Urbino
Urbino is a hill town built around the Ducal Palace of Federico da Montefeltro, one of the reference points of early Renaissance architecture, and it's also Raphael's birthplace. It's smaller and steeper than San Marino's own old town, with a working university keeping it lived-in rather than purely a sight. The whole center is walkable in a day, but the palace and its Galleria Nazionale delle Marche reward slow time.

San Leo
San Leo is a fortress town on a sheer rock outcrop, closer to San Marino than any other day trip on this list and arguably the most dramatic single sight in the area. The Rocca di San Leo, rebuilt by Francesco di Giorgio Martini, sits on a cliff edge and is best known as the prison that held the occultist Cagliostro until his death. It's a short trip that still fills a satisfying half-to-full day.

Ravenna
Ravenna was the capital of the Western Roman Empire and later of Byzantine Italy, and it holds the best collection of Byzantine mosaics outside Istanbul. Eight of its monuments are a UNESCO World Heritage site together, and several - the Basilica of San Vitale, the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, and the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare Nuovo - can be seen within a compact walk of the center. This is a longer drive than the others on this list, so it needs a fuller day.

Bologna
Bologna is the biggest city on this list and the farthest, built around Europe's oldest university and a medieval center defined by porticoes, brick towers, and food. The Two Towers, the Basilica di San Petronio on Piazza Maggiore, and the covered market streets of the Quadrilatero give a full day of walking, and the city's food culture is a genuine reason to go rather than a side note. At over 135 km and close to two hours each way, this is the longest drive of the group.

It works as a beach-day trip from San Marino rather than a sightseeing one - the draw is the organized stabilimenti, the pedestrian shopping street Viale Ceccarini, and the wider Adriatic Riviera strip of similar towns along the coast.
