Asturias

Asturias is an autonomous community on Spain's rugged northern coast, bordered by the Cantabrian Sea to the north and the Cantabrian Mountains to the south. Known as the 'Natural Paradise,' the region combines dramatic cliffs, emerald valleys, medieval villages, and the towering peaks of Picos de Europa National Park. Its Celtic heritage, distinctive cider culture, world-class seafood, and UNESCO-listed pre-Romanesque monuments make it one of Iberia's most rewarding destinations for independent travelers.

About Asturias

Asturias stretches 334 km across Spain's 'Green Coast,' receiving abundant Atlantic rainfall that keeps the landscape brilliantly verdant year-round. The capital Oviedo preserves Spain's finest concentration of pre-Romanesque architecture, while Gijón serves as the region's cosmopolitan harbor city. The interior harbors ancient beech forests, wolf and bear territory, and pastoral landscapes dotted with granaries (hórreos). Asturias was the starting point of the Reconquista—King Pelayo's victory at Covadonga in 718 AD launched the Christian kingdoms' centuries-long campaign to reclaim Iberia, and the region's historical pride runs deep.

Best time to visit Asturias

Essential travel tips

  • Siesta hours (2–5 PM) mean many shops close in smaller towns; plan accordingly
  • Sidrerías (cider houses) pour cider from height—this is traditional and expected
  • Book Covadonga Lakes bus tickets in advance during summer (July–August)
  • Many rural roads are narrow; drive slowly and give way on blind corners

Hidden gems

Off-the-beaten-path corners most travellers miss.

Playa de Gulpiyuri

An inland beach connected to the sea by underground rock tunnels. Seawater enters at high tide forming a unique landlocked beach in a meadow. The beach disappears at high tide—visit within 2 hours either side of low tide.

Naves, Llanes (75 km from Oviedo)

Bufones de Pría Blowholes

Sea caves with underwater passages that erupt in geysers when Atlantic waves surge through. Best in rough weather when waves are above 2 metres. Completely free and almost completely unknown outside Asturias.

Near Pría, Llanes (90 km from Oviedo)

Llastres Fishing Village

A smaller and far less-visited alternative to Cudillero. Llastres cascades down a limestone cliff to a working fishing harbor with sensational seafood restaurants perched above the sea. Only 5 km from the MUJA dinosaur museum.

Colunga, central coast (55 km from Oviedo)

Castro de Coaña Celtic Hillfort

One of Iberia's best-preserved Celtic hillforts (castros), dating to the 1st century BC, with original circular stone roundhouses and a small museum. Completely uncrowded even in peak summer.

Coaña, western Asturias (130 km from Oviedo)
