Playa de la Concha is a crescent-shaped urban beach in San Sebastián (Donostia), in the Basque Country of northern Spain, and is consistently ranked among the finest city beaches in Europe. The bay stretches approximately 1.35 kilometres between the headland of Monte Urgull to the east and the Monte Igueldo promontory to the west, sheltered by the small island of Santa Clara at its centre. The beach is fringed by the Paseo de la Concha, a graceful Belle Époque promenade lined with ornate iron railings and backed by 19th-century hotels and townhouses. The sand is fine and golden, the water calm inside the protective bay, and the overall setting — with Urgull's forested hill and the island visible from the shoreline — makes it photogenic from almost any angle. The promenade extends west around the headland to Playa de Ondarreta, a smaller and somewhat less crowded continuation. The Palacio de Miramar, a royal summer residence set in a hillside park above the beach, overlooks the bay from the headland dividing the two beaches. Beach chairs and umbrellas are available for hire from June through September. The beach is patrolled by lifeguards in peak season. Water quality is consistently high, monitored by the city government. Swimming is safest at mid-tide when the bay is fullest. The beach is within easy walking distance of San Sebastián's Old Town (Parte Vieja) and the Gros district, making it straightforward to combine beach time with pintxos bars and the wider city.
