Cerro Calderico — Consuegra Windmill Ridge

The Cerro Calderico loop is a 4 km ridge walk along the windmill-studded skyline of Consuegra, a historic market town in Toledo province, Castile-La Mancha. The walk follows a hardened track along the crest of Cerro Calderico, a quartzite ridge rising approximately 85 metres above the surrounding plain, where twelve restored 16th-century windmills (molinos de viento) stand in a row against the open La Mancha horizon alongside the weathered ruins of the Castillo de La Muela — a Moorish castle later enlarged by the Knights of St John.

Access is by car from Toledo (65 km, approximately 50 minutes via the CM-42) or by bus from Toledo (several daily services). Parking is freely available at the base of Cerro Calderico near the road ascending to the windmill row. The track begins from the car park and ascends gently to the ridge crest. No permit is required and there is no charge for the ridge walk, although a small entry fee applies to visit the castle interior and certain open windmills.

The 4 km loop follows the ridge crest out to the castle at the far end and returns along the same exposed ridge. The trail surface is compacted earth with some loose gravel; walking shoes are sufficient. The 85-metre ascent is distributed gradually over the first half-kilometre and the ridge itself is essentially flat. The round trip takes 1.5 to 2 hours at a relaxed pace, including time to visit open windmills. No shade exists along the open ridge.

Several windmills are open to visitors. Molino Bolero contains a working mill exhibit with original grain-milling machinery; Molino Sancho houses the local tourist office. The Castillo de La Muela at the far end of the ridge dates to the Moorish period (9th–10th century) and commands the widest views of the walk — the flat La Mancha plain stretches in all directions, with the wetlands of Tablas de Daimiel visible on clear days. The windmills are closely associated with the opening chapters of Cervantes' Don Quijote and are among the best-preserved in the region.

In late October and early November, saffron (Crocus sativus) fields surrounding the hill turn violet during the harvest season. Consuegra's annual Fiesta de la Rosa del Azafrán is held on the last Sunday of October and draws large crowds from across Spain. The ridge is exposed to wind and sun year-round; morning visits are more comfortable in summer.
