Quimet & Quimet

Quimet & Quimet is a legendary Barcelona standing bar on Carrer del Poeta Cabanyes in the Poble Sec neighbourhood, operating from a space barely large enough to accommodate twenty people with any comfort. The bar has been in the Quim family for five generations and is a direct product of that lineage — small, personal, specialist, and entirely unmoved by trends. Its fame is built on two things: the montaditos and the wine. The montaditos at Quimet & Quimet are small open-topped rolls topped with an extraordinarily inventive range of combinations, assembled from an astonishing array of tinned and preserved Spanish and international foods that line the walls and shelves from floor to ceiling. Smoked salmon with honey and yoghurt; sea urchin on cream cheese; anchovy with olive oil and pepper; artichoke hearts with jamón — each combination is precise and often surprising, created in the moment by the family behind the bar. The wine selection is equally serious: the bar stocks hundreds of references from across Spain and beyond, with a particular depth in rare vermouths and sherries. Standing room is the only format — there are no tables and no chairs. Customers hold their plates and glasses and navigate the space in a closely packed but remarkably convivial way. The bar is open only for lunch and early evening, closing at 10:30 PM, and is closed on Sundays and on Saturday evenings. Given its tiny size and fervent reputation, Quimet & Quimet fills quickly, and early arrival is strongly advised to avoid waiting on the pavement.
