Xàtiva (Játiva) — Castle and Historic Town
The hilltop castle town of Xàtiva is one of the most rewarding day trips from Valencia. The twin castles (Major and Minor) trace their origins to Iberian and Roman times, and the town below is a beautifully preserved historic centre with a magnificent main street, Gothic churches, and excellent local restaurants. Birthplace of Pope Alexander VI (Rodrigo Borja) and the painter José de Ribera.

Peñíscola — Castle Town and Beaches
Peñíscola's dramatic 14th-century castle (where the Antipope Benedict XIII lived from 1414 to his death in 1423) towers over a perfectly preserved medieval walled town on a rocky peninsula, surrounded by beaches on three sides. The setting (and its use as a filming location for Game of Thrones) makes it one of Spain's most dramatic coastal towns.

La Tomatina — Buñol
Every last Wednesday of August, the small town of Buñol hosts one of the world's most famous festivals — La Tomatina. At 11:00, a signal is fired and 150,000 kg of ripe tomatoes are distributed and thrown for exactly one hour. The streets run red. Participants (now limited by ticket to ~20,000) must wear old clothes and goggles.

Guadalest, Altea & Calpe — Costa Blanca Road Trip
