Kandy

Galle Fort
Galle Fort is the walled Dutch colonial-era quarter on the south coast, built on earlier Portuguese fortifications and still lived in today rather than preserved as a museum piece. Its ramparts, coral-stone streets and mix of colonial townhouses, churches and mosques make it a place for unhurried walking rather than a checklist of sights. Negombo
Negombo is a fishing and beach town close to the international airport, built around a long stretch of sand and an active fish market rather than major monuments. Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage
Pinnawala is a state-run elephant orphanage and breeding ground established to care for abandoned and orphaned elephants, now home to a large resident herd. The main draw is watching a big group of elephants move as a herd, including the twice-daily river bathing when the animals are walked down to the Ma Oya river. It is a straightforward, single-focus day trip built around those fixed bathing times.

Anuradhapura Ancient City
Anuradhapura was Sri Lanka's first capital and remained the centre of Sinhalese civilisation for well over a thousand years, leaving behind a wide, spread-out complex of dagobas, monastery ruins and sacred sites rather than a single compact ruin. Because the site covers a large area, seeing it properly means covering ground by bicycle or tuk-tuk rather than on foot. The Sri Maha Bodhi, grown from a cutting of the tree under which the Buddha is said to have attained enlightenment, is one of the oldest continuously documented trees in the world.
