Money-saving tips
Practical ways to stretch your budget further.
Use marshrutkas (minibuses) for city transport at $0.20 — they cover all major routes in Dushanbe and are far cheaper than taxis
Eat where locals eat — chaykhanas (teahouses) and local lunchrooms serve enormous portions of plov and shurbo for $2-4
Stay in family homestays outside Dushanbe — typically $15-25 including breakfast and dinner, far cheaper and more authentic than hotels
Share taxis (collective taxis) are the budget-friendly way to travel between cities — far cheaper than private hire
Buy fruit, dried fruits, and snacks at Mehrgon Bazaar rather than at tourist shops — prices are 3-5 times lower
Obtain a GBAO permit before arrival at a Dushanbe OVIR office ($50) rather than through a tour agency which charges extra
Cook simple meals in hostel kitchens — ingredients from the bazaar are very cheap and the experience of shopping locally is rewarding
